Adjustable Dumbbell Weight Guide
Not sure which dumbbell weight to choose? Use our free dumbbell weight calculator to find a sensible starting range based on your experience, training goal and exercise. Select your training level, goal and exercise to get a suggested starting range.
What dumbbell weight should I start with?
Choose a weight that allows you to complete your planned repetitions with steady, controlled technique. The final few repetitions should feel challenging, but you should still be able to maintain your posture and complete the full movement.
The right weight will vary considerably between exercises. You may use relatively light dumbbells for lateral raises and curls, but much heavier weights for rows, Romanian deadlifts and goblet squats. For that reason, there is no single dumbbell weight that is suitable for every exercise.
Beginners should normally start near the lower end of the suggested range. Complete a practice set, assess your technique and increase the weight only when the movement remains controlled.

Side-by-Side Comparison
ADJUSTABLE VS FIXED DUMBBELLS
Both can deliver an effective workout. The better choice depends on your available space, training setup and how many different weights you need.
ADJUSTABLE DUMBBELLS
Multiple weight settings in one compact pair, making them well suited to home gyms, progressive training and limited storage space.
FIXED DUMBBELLS
Simple, durable and ready to use immediately, but a full weight range requires multiple pairs and more storage space.
WHICH IS BETTER FOR A HOME GYM?
Fixed dumbbells offer maximum simplicity, but adjustable dumbbells are usually the more practical choice for a home gym. One pair can cover a broad weight range while taking up far less space than a growing collection of fixed dumbbells. Fixed dumbbells may still suit larger training spaces or households where several people need different weights at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about choosing between our adjustable dumbbell options.
Which adjustable dumbbells are best for beginners?
Adjustable dumbbells with a low starting weight and smaller weight increments are usually the easiest option for beginners. Our 24kg Adjustable Dumbbells start at 2.5kg, while our 1kg Increment Adjustable Dumbbells start at 3kg and allow smaller increases as your strength improves. If you are new to strength training, choose a weight that allows you to maintain controlled technique before increasing the resistance.
Should I buy 24kg, 40kg or 45kg adjustable dumbbells?
The right maximum weight depends on your current strength and how far you expect to progress. A 24kg pair is a practical option for beginners and general home workouts. A 40kg pair provides more room for progressive strength training and is a strong all-round choice for most home gyms. A 45kg pair is better suited to experienced lifters who regularly perform heavier presses, rows, squats and Romanian deadlifts.
Are 1kg weight increments better for adjustable dumbbells?
1kg increments are particularly useful when you want to increase resistance gradually. Smaller jumps can be helpful for exercises such as lateral raises, curls and shoulder presses, where a larger increase in weight may feel significant. Our 1kg Increment Adjustable Dumbbells are available with 24kg, 32kg and 40kg maximum weights, allowing you to combine smaller progression steps with the overall weight range that suits your training.
Are 40kg adjustable dumbbells enough for building muscle?
For many home gym users, 40kg per dumbbell provides substantial room for muscle and strength progression. It gives you enough range for lighter isolation exercises as well as heavier movements such as dumbbell presses, rows, lunges and Romanian deadlifts. Whether 40kg is enough long term will depend on your strength, exercise selection and training goals.
Are 45kg adjustable dumbbells worth it for heavy training?
A 45kg adjustable dumbbell pair is worth considering if you already train with heavier weights or want plenty of room for future strength progression. The higher maximum load is particularly useful for exercises such as rows, presses, Romanian deadlifts and lower-body movements. However, the 5kg increments are larger than those on some of our other models, so lifters who prioritise smaller progression steps may prefer the 1kg increment range.
What should I look for when choosing adjustable dumbbells?
When comparing adjustable dumbbells, consider the starting weight, maximum weight, size of each weight increment and number of available settings. A lower starting weight and smaller increments can be useful for beginners and isolation exercises, while a higher maximum weight provides more room for heavier strength training. You should also consider how quickly the weight can be adjusted, the dumbbell’s overall size and how much progression you expect from your training.
