Home Gym Equipment: The Perfect Valentine’s Gift!

For many fitness fanatics, the purchase of home gym equipment is a solitary affair. The idea is to acquire what they need to work out in their own dedicated room rather than heading to a public gym with its shared facilities.

To some, that might seem a very practical thing to do and for introverts, it could be very appealing. For others, however, it might seem like a missed opportunity to add something extra to fitness by expanding one’s social circle with like-minded people.

Indeed, many people do go to the gym with that reason - and more - in mind, with research indicating that around 12 per cent of gym goers treat finding romance there as a higher priority than any particular fitness goal.

However, this particular consideration may not apply to some other folk, and not because not everyone is only interested in having a significant other who is as much of a gym bunny as them.

Instead, it may be that you are already in a relationship with someone who does like to work out just as much as you.

You may even have met in a gym or some other athletic setting, such as a distance run or other sporting activity you were both taking part in. This changes everything, because it means a home gym will be a shared gym after all.

Why Is Working Out As A Couple A Great Idea?

If this is the case, could some home gym equipment be a Valentine’s gift to each other? With the traditional day of romance a few weeks away, now is the time to consider it.

That’s not to say that your romance is so shallow as to be based purely on physical attraction stemming from supreme fitness, but if you both love working out and like to do so together, you can be pretty sure it is something you will both appreciate.

Indeed, making sure you have a home gym where you can work out together has some great advantages:

·       You can help to support and motivate each other in your fitness goals

·       You can plan your schedules around workouts more easily

·       You can share the privacy and convenience of doing it at home

·       It means time spent working out is time spent together, not apart

·       If you are feeling in the mood, you can shower together afterwards

Best of all, there is research to show that working out together is better for the longevity of your relationship.

How Popular Is Working Out As A Couple?

A study by Harlow Leisurezone of online search data over three years from January 2022 to January 2025 found that couples have increasingly been working out together, Lit Magazine noted.

Whether this was a popular activity in the pandemic that has become an ingrained habit, or something that has simply caught on (maybe through word-of-mouth recommendation or online promotion) does not matter. It is growing and it has great benefits.

The biggest increase was among Welsh couples (22.2 per cent), although the town or city with the greatest increase was Ripon in North Yorkshire (550 per cent). But niche geographical stats, interesting as they might be, matter less than what it means for the couples involved.

Among these are the points mentioned above, with caveats such as the fact that couples should not seek to compete with each other.

The headline of the Lit Magazine quipped: “Couples that work out together stay together” without citing any evidence to back this up. However, a Jama Medical study published in 2021 showed that exercising with a romantic partner did have such positive effects.

Among the key findings were that people exercise more effectively with a romantic partner, while relationship satisfaction increases in the process.

This makes the whole prospect a win-win. Working out together makes you fitter and brings you closer, quite apart from any day-to-day practical benefits of time and space usage that it can bring.

Will You Have A Valentine’s Work-out?

Some might think that Valentine’s Day should be traditional, with red roses, big cards, lots of sloppy kisses and a romantic meal in a nice restaurant. But not everyone wants to do that, and even if you do, that is only about how you spend February 14th.

Some might imagine dumbbells, a workout bench, or an air bike is an odd thing to have wrapped up with lots of love hearts, but the evidence suggests anyone who thinks that way should look at the evidence.

Of course, you can still go for a romantic meal, have a glass of champagne and some fancy heart-shaped chocolates.

However, that means consuming a lot of calories, so that is an extra reason to make good use of your home gym equipment, whatever other physical activities you might want to do on February 14th.
